Change the Appearance of a Layer

Customize how a data layer looks, based on your preference.

Keeping in with the theme of being user friendly, Acres has paid special attention to how users customize the look and feel of the data layers and therefore the maps they use, based on their preference.

Simple steps to change the appearance of your data set:

  • Click on the Layers tab to open the Layers interface.
  • Find your desired layer, whether through scrolling or searching.
  • Open the layer by clicking on the layer card.
  • Click on Appearance near the top (between Data and Details).
  • Adjust the appearance to your preference.
  • Be sure to click Save Style if you want to keep those preferences.

Layer Appearance Flow

Additional steps and notes:

Once you click on Appearance you will see the customization options for the layer’s appearance. This works a lot like the formatting we are used to on powerpoint and similar tools.

Note that Acres uses three different types of data layers: Points, Shapes, and Lines.

While the general rules are the same, each of these will provide different levels of customizations.

Layers Appearance

Color Source

All layers will give you the following options:

Solid Color - This sets everything to one uniform color. Choose from our color selections and change the opacity.

Color Gradient - You can choose from one of our select color gradients to depict the data set of your choosing. You can also reverse the gradient.

When using a Color Gradient you have the option to set the Field of Interest. Choose which datapoint you want to be displayed, whether the height of wind turbines, the category of public lands, etc.

On some data sets you can also set the Data Division Type and/or Range of Interest.

Fill Opacity - Select from 0% to 100% opacity.

Point Data

Fill Settings include Solid Color or Color Gradient and the option to set Opacity.

Line Data

Line Settings include:

  • Line Type - You can choose whether you want the layer lines to show in solid color or dashed.
  • Line Thickness - How thick do you want the layer lined to be. If you are looking at a large lay of land - the thickness will be on the lower side, if looking at a specific parcel - you can use thicker lines without the lines getting jumbled up.
  • Solid Color - You can choose one uniform color for the layer lines.
  • Color Gradient - You can choose from one of our select color gradients to depict the data set of your choosing. You can also reverse the gradient.
  • Line Opacity - You can set the opacity from 0 to 100%.

Shape Data

The only option with both fill and border options. Fill works like the others, setting a color or gradient and its opacity within the shape. Border adds or removes a border around the shape, and borders can be adjusted in color, opacity, thickness, or even line type.
