Filter the Data Layer

  1. Select “Layers” on the left navigation menu.
  2. Search for a Layer of interest, for example, Railroads.
  3. Select Railroads to turn the layer on.
  4. Select Filters.
  5. Use the column drop down menu to select a column of interest, for example the Railroad column entitled “fullname (text)”.

Pro tip: The parentheses show what the column contains, i.e., “text” contains words and “numeric” means numbers.

  6. Choose what items in your column should be returned using the text field.
    1. For text columns, choose whether you want an exact match for your search or if the filter should return anything containing what you type in the filter.
      1. For example, in the Railroad dataset, choose “Contains” and type “Norfolk” in the “Column Search” box. Then, select “Apply” in the bottom of the panel to filter to all “fullname (text)” column rows that contain the word “Norfolk”. This will return “Norfolk Southern Rlwy” and “Norfolk and Western RR” as they both contain “Norfolk”. Alternatively, type the full name of either to narrow to the single railroad of choice.
      2. If you would like to filter on additional information in the same column, you can select “Add Value” and repeat the steps above. For example, expand to include rows containing “Union” to capture Union Pacific in the returned output alongside what is returned for “Norfolk”.
    2. For numeric columns, you can select “Add Column Filter” to see options for exact number or numeric range. For the Railroads example, select the column named “id and then “Exact”. Type 43602 in the filter box and then “Apply” at the bottom of the panel. This will ensure the rows returned include “Norfolk” or “Union” in the fullname column as well as the number 43602 in the id column.

Pro tip: If you would like to keep these filters on for this specific layer, you can ensure the “Remember Filters” checkbox is selected in the bottom left of the panel. Otherwise, unselect to forget the filters after this specific filter use case.
